Graduate Teaching Associate (TA)

Positions

The Department of Geological Sciences has a number of positions for Graduate Teaching Associates each semester. A TA is a CSUF graduate student who is appointed part-time, usually to teach credit-bearing laboratory courses. Responsibility for a course may be vested in the TA under the direct supervision of an appropriate faculty member.

Duties may include the following:

• providing classroom, laboratory, and/or field instruction,
• preparing course materials, preparing and administering assignments to students,
• administering examinations, grading student work and otherwise assessing student performance, and determining course grades,
• holding scheduled office hours, and
• meeting the expectations of TAs for the specific course, as established by the Department, supervising faculty member, and/or laboratory coordinator.

TAs may be required to take appropriate safety classes as deemed necessary by the Department. Such classes may include, but are not limited to, the CSUF Van Safety and Laboratory Safety Classes.

Graduate Assistant (GA)

Class Codes 2325 (Monthly), 2355 (Academic Year) or 2326 (On-Campus Work Study)

Positions

The Department of Geological Sciences has a number of positions for Graduate Assistants each semester. A GA is a CSUF graduate student who, under immediate supervision, is appointed part-time to assist faculty teaching credit-bearing courses or to assist faculty in research activities.

Duties may include the following:

• assisting in the instruction of students, clarifying course material or course content for students, leading small discussion groups,
• supervising laboratory periods, workshops, or other course activities,
• preparing course materials for lecture, laboratory, or field components of courses,
• assisting the instructor by handling equipment or performing demonstrations,
• maintaining office hours to provide direct individual contact between student and GA,
• generally assisting faculty in evaluating student work and grading examinations,
• assisting faculty with field experience, supervision, or simulation exercises,
• providing assistance to faculty and students conducting authorized research by collecting, synthesizing, and analyzing data, searching the literature and compiling bibliographies or literature reviews, operating and maintaining research equipment, preparing research materials, assisting in the conduct of laboratory or field experiments, etc., and
• performing other functions requiring knowledge and background beyond that generally possessed by undergraduate assistants.

Participation in the appropriate safety classes (e.g. Driver Safety Class, Laboratory Safety Class) may be required for continued appointment at the discretion of the Department.

Instructional Student Assistant (ISA)

Class Codes 1150 or 1151 (On-Campus Work Study)

Positions

An Instructional Student Assistant is a CSUF graduate or undergraduate student who is appointed at an hourly rate to perform teaching, grading or tutoring duties, during an academic term, under the direct supervision of an appropriate faculty member.

Duties may include the following

• providing classroom, laboratory, and/or field instructional assistance to a faculty member or student,
• assisting with laboratory periods, workshops, field trips or other course activities,
• administering to students course materials or assignments prepared by the supervising faculty member,
• grading student work and otherwise assessing student performance, and
• holding scheduled office hours to provide tutoring or other assistance to students.

If lab work is part of the assigned duties, participation in the Laboratory Safety Class offered by the CSUF Research and Instructional Safety Office is required for continued appointment.

If driving is part of the assigned duties, then a California Driver’s license and successful completion of all training and certification deemed necessary by the Department and University is required for continued appointment.
