Engineering Geology

Field Trip Guidelines

The following guidelines contain details about the upcoming field trip.  We will be observing certain geologic phenomena at various locations and at each stop you will need to answer a question pertinent to that outcrop.  Your participation in this field trip is mandatory for which you will receive 25 points counted in your overall grade provided you hand in the answer sheet and attend the entire trip (no partial credit for partial participation).

MEETING LOCATION AND TIME:  Meet me at 7:30 AM in the Parking Lot C behind SLC, Saturday, September 9.

WHAT TO WEAR:  I am wearing shorts, t-shirt and light hiking boots but tennis shoes will do.  You may want to wear a hat and sunglasses as I will-up to you.  If you burn easy, put on some sunscreen and probably lip balm wouldn’t be a bad idea.

WHAT TO BRING:  Bring a lunch, a bottle or two of water, a pen or pencil, notebook and a sweatshirt if you get cold easy (early am and later pm may be cool but not cold).  We may stop for lunch where there are restroom facilities but there will be sustained periods of time away from such facilities (like golfing).  All of this should go into a pack of some kind but it need not be one for sustained hiking, we will not be away from the cars for any long stretch or on any long hikes.  If driving please have your vehicle gassed up.  We will be driving about 100 miles total.

WHAT NOT TO BRING:  Firearms and alcohol are strictly forbidden.  I am discouraging ipods and such as I would prefer your constant attention on the trip (you can keep them in your own car of course).

WHERE WE ARE GOING:  The field trip begins and ends at CSUF.  We will begin the trip by going up the 57 to the 60 Freeway east to the 15 Freeway north and on into Cajon Pass.  Get off the 15 on Cleghorn Rd and go under the freeway onto Cajon Blvd-we will regroup there about 8:30.

STOP 1:  We will go south on Cajon Blvd about 1.5 miles to Blue Cut.

STOP 2:  San Francisquito along Cajon Blvd heading back to the freeway.

Proceed to the freeway and continue north out of Cajon Pass to Bear Valley Cutoff and go east to Hwy 18.

STOP 3:  Near the intersection of Bear Valley Cutoff and Hwy 18 we will pull over and inspect the geology.

Continue on 18 to Lucerne Valley where we will go south on 18 (Do not go straight onto 247-sure its fun but its not where I am going).

STOP 4:  Near the Cement Plant before we go up the grade we will take a short hike to look at the Old Woman Sandstone and vicinity.

Back onto 18 and continue south a ways.

STOP 5:  Nearer or just past the cement plant we will look at their activities etc.

Continue south again on 15 to Baldwin Lake and take the road south to Doble Mine and go up the forest road to Gold Mountain.

STOP 6:  Gold Mountain

Come back down the same way and proceed south again towards Big Bear Lake City but continue east onto Hwy 38 to Onyx Summit.

STOP 7:  Onyx Summit

Back on the road again to the south and west to Barton Flats.

STOP 8:  Cienaga Seca

Continue west on 38 but turn north off of  38 onto the road to Seven Oaks in Barton Flats.

STOP 9:  Seven Oaks Dam

Back to Barton Flats and continue west on 38 to the bottom of the mountain where it intersects the Moutain Home Village to Forest Falls road.  Turn west on it (the continuation of Hwy 38) and go a little ways to a pull out near Mill Creek.

STOP 10:  Mill Creek Beds

END OF TRIP:  This is the last stop of the trip and we will finish there about 4 PM.  The van will return to CSUF by 5 PM.
