Student Learning Goals

In Spring 2002, the faculty developed the following Geology Learning Outcomes statement:

A.  Bachelor of Science in Geology

Students graduating with a Geology B.S. from CSUF should be able to

  1. describe, classify and interpret geologic field data and interpret the geologic history of an area by integrating all types of field data
  2. read, interpret, and construct geologic maps, cross sections and block diagrams and use such diagrams to visualize geologic relations in the four dimensions of space and time
  3. understand geologic time, explain the geologic time scale and its scientific basis, recount the milestone events in Earth history, and understand the basics of common dating methods
  4. apply physics, chemistry and biology to the understanding of Earth systems and cycles, including plate tectonics and the rock cycle, the water cycle, and the life cycle and evolution
  5. understand the role of geology in everyday life; appreciate the extent of human impact on Earth systems and environments; and understand the processes that create natural hazards, and the strategies that minimize their impact on society
  6. perform independent  geological research by applying the scientific method; identify and locate existing geologic information; and communicate data and interpretations orally and in writing using appropriate technology

B.  Masters of Science in Geology

Students graduating with a Geology M.S. from CSUF are expected to have advanced knowledge of the Geological Sciences with an emphasis in current research developments in their specialty.  This goal will be achieved by:

  1. taking advanced courses within their discipline
  2. attending research seminars at CSUF and other local institutions and societies
  3. presenting research at regional and international professional conferences
  4. conducting an independent research program that includes
    1. the writing of a research proposal
    2. the production of a written thesis that describes the problem, methodology, and results of the student’s research
    3. dissemination of the results through publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentations at regional and/or international conferences
    4. an oral defense of the thesis before the department and the student’s thesis committee.
